Abstract:
This theme issue presents a collection of recent empirical studies on immigrants' residential experience in North America. Four papers address housing experience, design, planning, and policy issues for Arab Muslim, Hmong, Latino, and South Asian communities. Relevant issues and directions for urban policy and planning that have emerged from these studies are briefly presented. These include need to view and examine the residential experience as a dynamic and fluid process, need for greater policy support for local innovations, responsive planning and design of housing and neighborhoods for ethnic seniors, and greater civic participation of ethnic communities in municipal government and regional public policy decision-making processes.
