Abstract:
Describes the case of a 58-yr-old Hmong (Southeast Asian) woman, in which the Hmong family referred to cultural beliefs to which they did not subscribe so they could avoid disclosing to the woman the terminal nature of her illness. Uncovering actual motivation can be accomplished only by being sensitive to the patient and the family's cultural beliefs while maintaining the provision of informed high quality health care.
