Abstract:
This study examined the use of child safety seats (CSS) in Hmong families with children under the age of two in one Midwestern community. Fifty Hmong parents were observed placing their children in vehicles at a Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Supplemental Nutrition Program Center. After the investigators determined CSS use and misuse, the parents were asked about awareness of CSS misuse, current and previous CSS use, sources of information about CSS use, and future interest in learning more about CSS use. Follow up visits were made to eight homes to observe CSSs that were not in use. Rates of CSS nonuse (43 of 50 parents, or 86%) and misuse (49 of 50 parents, or 98%) were far above the national average. Further investigation of CSS use among refugee populations is warranted to determine if these rates are indicative of CSS use among other refugee populations.
