Abstract:
Objectives: To examine the prevalence of depression in patients with chronic heart failure from our service. To describe the characteristics of the patients with chronic heart failure and probable depresión. Material and methods: It was done a descriptive assessment of cross- section in 46 patients with chronic heart failure between January and December 2011.The psychological evaluation was done with the test of the World Heart Organization to determine the possibility of depresión. Clinical and electrocardiograms and laboratory parameters were tested. Echocardiogram, Cheste x- ray and electrocardiograms were done to all the patients. The percentage of Leith ventricle ejection fraction was set and the difference between diastolic and/ or systolic heart failure could be seen. Results: 46 patients, age of 65.2 +13.8 years; 56% female. The 57% (95% CI: 41.1% 71.9%) of the patients showed a probable diagnosis of depression. The depresión was significantly associated to the low ejection fraction of the Leith ventricle (p = 0.008) and to a previous acute myocardial infarction (p = 0.01). A significant statistical association hmong probability of depresión, type of heart failure (P = 0.5), NYHA functional class (p = 0.20) and blood urea levels (p = 0.44) was not found. Conclusions: The prevalence of depression in heart failure patients is high. These findings suggest that new investigations are necessary for an early detection of this comorbidity and the use of effective Management strategies for patients with chronic heart failure and depresión.
