Abstract:
In 2009, the San Bernardino National Forest capped Bay Tree Spring, a human-made well on Black Mountain. Local lore indicated that the well was dug by the Civilian Conservation Corps. At the time the well was capped, it was reputed to have healing qualities or was otherwise the center of religious or ceremonial activity by Hmong, Korean, Orthodox Christian, and the local spiritual community. This paper examines the archaeological and historical evidence for the creation of the well and its transformation into a sacred site. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
