Abstract:
The Minneapolis-Saint Paul, MN, media blamed two maternal filicides on cultural conflict between the norms of Hmong immigrants & American values. This paper employs a constructionist framework heuristically in order to circumscribe the dimensions of this cultural conflict stance to underscore its tenuous nature. An oppositional reading of the media accounts builds on a discussion of the complexities of Hmong culture, a consideration of instances of conflict between Hmong & American norms, & a content analysis of newspaper articles about the Hmong. The media's refusal to note patterns of economic oppression supports the dominant institutions of power & authority while discrediting an artificially encapsulated cultural group. 66 References.
